Director Stool

This furniture piece was my first attempt at traditional woodworking. I learned a myriad of techniques like turning wood, doing wood joints, and using a variety of power tools. This was a project done in a course called “Furniture as Architecture” taught by Steven Mankouche at The University of Michigan.

Design Process

  • Research began with looking at differing kinds of stools and finding an interesting reference to base my project off of. I also look at other unique designs or designers to inspire me in other ways.

  • This project was made of Poplar Wood. The lathe was used primarily for this project. All the legs were turned along with the supports. Mortise and Tenon joints were used to attach the different parts.

  • After the stool was built, I used a boiled linseed oil and paste wax to hydrate the wood and seal it. This brought a depth to the wood that brought it all together. I also painted one of the legs with a white paint. This was chosen to emphasize the wear of the stool overtime.

  • This piece was primarily inspired by the fashion house Maison Martin Margiela. I emphasized the process in the final piece, and the white paint is a trademark used within the house.
